Tediousness vs. Interest

Just got done reading this post by a respected high-energy physicist at Fermilab. I find that the same behaviour applies in a lot of other endeavors in life. Some people on mailing lists I have frequented call this “bikeshedding.” Typically software developers tend to spend too much time getting the little things perfect, the average stuff goes unreviewed, difficult things get more attention, but truly urgent stuff (like critical bugfixes) go into production almost completely unreviewed.

This is less a commentary on particle physicists or software developers and much more a commentary on humanity.

It’s official: Linux is on the desktop. Check out http://www.dell.com/ – right on the front page they are selling computers with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed.

Wait… do you hear… is that angels singing?

Edit: Okay, so it’s not every load of Dell.com. Still, though, it’s nothing but good.

Jennifer and I had quite a weekend. Not only have we been packing, sorting, and organizing for the big move to Wartburg, but we’re also planning a camping trip for next weekend and I preached all three services at Saint Andrew’s this weekend. And we went on a 15 mile bike ride, where we saw a bobcat and its kittens (is that what the offspring of a bobcat is called?). I wish we had brought our camera!
