I’m thinking this morning about the connection between outward signs and inward meaning. This generation has swallowed whole the idea that clothes, music, etc. have no meaning. Surely that’s not true. But can we expand our horizon of cultural meanings without making one set of forms the “right” ones? It’s one thing to say that clothing has a meaning, but it’s quite another to say that only one particular style of fashion can correctly portray the divine.
